Das Studium eines Quellencorpus, das mehr als 200 erhaltene Sch\u00fctzenbriefe umfasst, gew\u00e4hrt Einblick in Kommunikationsstrategien, durch die sich die organisierende Stadt im symbolischen, aber auch wirtschaftlichen Kr\u00e4ftemessen der St\u00e4dte im S\u00fcden des Heiligen R\u00f6mischen Reiches positionierte. Zwar versichert man sich in den Sch\u00fctzenbriefen der gegenseitigen, unverbr\u00fcchlichen Freundschaft um so notwendiger, als sie der Garant f\u00fcr ein Gelingen des sportlichen Wettstreits ist, doch dar\u00fcber hinaus lassen die Organisatoren ihre Briefe zu veritablen kommunikativen Waffen werden. Dies gilt insbesondere f\u00fcr das letzte Viertel des Jahrhunderts. Man k\u00fcndigte einen prestigetr\u00e4chtigen Preis an, druckte die Sch\u00fctzenbriefe, versandte sie mit mehreren Monaten Vorlauf und organisierte gleichzeitig Lotterien: St\u00e4dte wie N\u00f6rdlingen oder N\u00fcrnberg versuchten damit, sich innerhalb einer Kontinuit\u00e4t von Wettbewerben, wie sie andere vergleichbare St\u00e4dte im Reich seit l\u00e4ngerem praktizierten, zu verorten und sich von denjenigen St\u00e4dten abzugrenzen, deren Platz innerhalb dieser symbolischen Hierarchie weniger prominent war.
